Message from Mr. Lowe

Dear Brougham Families,

Welcome to Brougham Elementary School in Olathe, Kansas!  My name is Brian Lowe.  It is my privilege to serve as a principal.   Brougham is a wonderful school because of the fantastic students, supportive parents, and dedicated staff members.  Each day we take pride in providing a stimulating academic and inviting environment for your children.  There's just no place like Brougham!

I write a monthly newsletter called "Paw Prints" to the Brougham community.   Please check the newsletter link to read my most recent message.  I encourage you to call the school office or drop by during the year if we can be of help to you.   Please enjoy your visit to our fine school!

Sincerely,
Brian Lowe, Principal

Arriving and Leaving School
We discourage learners arriving before 8:00 a.m. We do have a "walking club" in the gym from 8:00 a.m.- 8:15 a.m. The first bell rings at 8:15 a.m. Teachers are on duty in their classrooms at 8:15 a.m. All learners arriving between 8:00 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. will be supervised in the gym, through the walking club.

Student safety is a concern to us all - especially in the parking lot. Following are procedures that all drivers are expected to follow:

SAFETY is # 1; please help us protect our students!

·     Students need to exit and enter vehicles on the passenger’s side.

·         When picking up, vehicles must line up BEFORE the crosswalk—the space past or (south) of the crosswalk is for daycare buses ONLY please.

·         Please note there is only ONE way to enter our parking lot – the North entrance.  The south is exit only.

·         In the morning: Please use the first (closest to the school) or second lane (the one in the parking lot) when dropping off children in the morning.  Please make sure children use the crosswalk at the Front door (south end of the building) and avoid crossing at any other point.  Mrs. Smith or Mr. Lowe will always be at the crosswalk to assist students.

·         In the afternoon:

-KINDERGARTEN- THIRD GRADE- USE THE FIRST LANE TO PICK UP YOUR CHILD (the one closest to the school).

-FOURTH-SIXTH- USE THE SECOND LANE (THE ONE IN THE PARKING LOT) to PICK UP YOUR CHILD.

·         If you have a younger child and an older child (i.e. 2nd grader and 4th grader), use the FIRST LANE TO PICK UP (the one closest to the school).  We are trying to avoid younger children being in the parking lot area.

·         Avoid making double lanes when pulling into the parking lot.  Instead, form a single lane of traffic in the drive.

·         If you need to park on Brougham Drive, we suggest parking on the side closest to the school (west side).  At times, traffic has not been able to get through on Brougham Drive due to cars on both sides of the street.  Never motion your child to cross Brougham Drive.

Thanks for practicing patience during this drop off and pick up period! Courtesy and patience are important character traits to model for Brougham students.

LUNCH ACCOUNTS
Please check your child's backpack for their lunch account balance. A child is only allowed two charges. Please make sure your child's account is current.

RECESS
Recess times are schedules during the day for learners' enjoyment and physical activity. It is expected that all students will participate. At the beginning of each school year, teachers review safety procedures and rules of conduct for the playground.

Temperature: The temperature of the air, wind speed, relative humidity, and amount of sunshine all effect whether the normal recess schedule is maintained. The following wind chill index is used:

Outdoor recess ------14 degrees or above
Limited recess---------9 degrees or above
Indoor recess----------8 degrees or below

Condition of the Playground Area: Due to children's safety, the amount of snow and ice may prohibit the use of the playground even when the temperature warrants outside or limited outside recess.

Appropriate Student Dress: Attire is another factor that effects the normal recess schedule. Particularly during cold weather, gloves/mittens, hats and boots are encouraged. If a student should come to school without clothing appropriate for the weather, the building staff will determine the appropriate course of action, dependent upon the conditions.

ABSENCE/ATTENDANCE:
A child should attend school every day. The progress of learners who miss more than 10 days of school is closely monitored and appropriate steps will be taken to work with you to improve attendance.

It is imperative that the nurse and principal be made aware of situations and /or medical concerns that affect a child's attendance at school. When chronic absenteeism occurs, the school may ask the parent to provide medical confirmation of the health of the student.

It is the parent's responsibility to call school, 913-780-7350, by 9:00 a.m. each day a child will be absent. At that time, parents should request homework if they wish the child's teacher to prepare missed assignments.

If the principal can be of assistance to you or your children, please contact Mr. Lowe at 913-780-7350. You can also email me at: blowebr@olatheschools.com.
