Carlotta has held many positions within our community, but she is probably best known and loved as “The Story Lady” from the Olathe Public Library. After earning a secretarial degree from Emporia State Teachers College in 1954, Carlotta worked at the Naval Air Station, Westinghouse and the Federal Aviation Administration before volunteering to help in the children’s department at the library in 1979. From 1981 to 2014, she was employed by the library as a storyteller where she also played the piano and helped children find the books they wanted. She continues as a volunteer with the library by mending books, helping to organize and run the annual book sales, handing out free books to homeless children and assisting with the Novel Teas. In addition to having been a Sunday school teacher and scout leader, Carlotta has been an integral part of the Old Settlers’ Planning Committee for 50-plus years. Conservative estimates put her volunteer hours at more than 3,000 since the 1970s. Hers is a legacy of enthusiasm for reading, love of community and selflessness through many hours of volunteering on so many levels.
