Performing Arts Courses
Choir 6
This course is open to any sixth grade student who enjoys singing. This class focuses on the enjoyment of singing and learning about the elements of choral music through performance. Throughout the year, attendance is required at performances and rehearsals which may be scheduled before/after school, in the evening, and on weekends. Home practice may be required as a graded assignment. Guided Enrollment Note: A uniform purchase may be required, and financial assistance is provided to those who qualify.
Band 6
In Band 6 students may have had prior band experience in 5th grade or start as beginners. Throughout the year, attendance is required at performances and rehearsals, which may be scheduled before/after school, in the evening and on weekends. Regular at-home practice will be required as a graded assignment. Guided Enrollment Note: Students must provide their own instruments. Individual practice and participation in performances are graded.
Orchestra 6
This course is open to all 6th grade string players and will focus on introducing and strengthening various playing techniques as well as beginning performance skills. Guided Enrollment Note: Students must furnish their own instruments. Individual practice and participation in performances are graded.
Intermediate Choir
In this class emphasis is placed on intermediate to advanced study of vocal technique, sight singing, and performance practices. Students should discuss guidelines for course placement with the vocal music instructor. Guided Enrollment Note: Throughout the year, attendance is required at performances and rehearsals which may be scheduled before/after school, in the evening, and on weekends. Home practice may be required as a graded assignment. A uniform purchase may be required, and financial assistance is provided to those who qualify.
Advanced Choir
In this class advanced study in vocal technique, sight singing, and performance practices will be provided. Guided Enrollment Note: This course is open by audition only. Throughout the year, attendance is required at performances and rehearsals which may be scheduled before/after school, in the evenings, and on weekends. Home practice may be required as a graded assignment. A uniform purchase may be required, and financial assistance is provided to those who qualify.
Advanced Ensemble
This audition group is an advanced choral music program. Independent singing, vocal technique, and sight singing skills will be developed. Guided Enrollment Note: Throughout the year, attendance is required at performances and rehearsal which mayk be scheduled before/after school, in the evening, and on weekends. Home practice may be required as a graded assignment. A uniform purchase may be required, and financial assistance is provided to those who qualify.
Intermediate Band
Prerequisite: Competitive audition and prior school band experience. This course is for 7th-8th grade students who desire further study and performance opportunities. Guided Enrollment Note: Throughout the year, attendance is required at performances and rehearsals, which may be scheduled before/after school, in the evening and on weekends. Regular at-home practice will be required as a graded assignment. Students must provide their own instrument. A uniform purchase may be required, and financial assistance is provided to those that qualify.
Advanced Band
Prerequisite: Competitive audition and prior school band experience. This course is for 7th-8th grade performers who desire advanced study and performance opportunities. Guided Enrollment Note: Throughout the year, attendance is required at performances and rehearsals, which may be scheduled before/after school, in the evening and on weekends. A uniform purchase may be required, and financial assistance is provided to those that qualify.
7th Grade Orchestra
Prerequisite: 6th Grade Orchestra or permission by instructor. This course is open to all 7th grade string players and focus on introducing and strengthening various playing techniques as well as intermediate performances skills. Guided Enrollment Note: Students must furnish their own instruments. Individual practice and participation in all performances are graded.
Jazz Band
Prerequisite: Competitive audition. Concurrent enrollment in any band or orchestra clas is required. Jazz Band provides students with strong fundamental skills covered in the concert band classes, with an introduction to various jazz styles, solo improvisation and performance opportunities. Guided Enrollment Note: Through the year, attendance is required at performances and rehearsals, which may be scheduled before/after school, in the evening and on weekends. Regular at-home practice is required as a graded assignment. Students must provide their own instrument. A uniform purchase may be required, and financial assistance is provided to those that qualify. This class is only offered when staffing and facilities allow.
8th Grade Orchestra
Prerequisite: 7th Grade Orchestra. This course is open to all 8th grade strings players and focuses on introducing and strengthening various playing techniques as well as performance skills. Guided Enrollment Note: Students most furnish their own instruments. Individual practice and participation in all performances are graded.
Band:
Band students will hve the opportunity to be in the John Philip Sousa and Northeast Kansas Music Educators Association Honor Bands. Several 8th graders were selected for these groups last year.

Choir:
We have six fun choir hours this year! Each choir will be doing special music to fit their interests and abilities, but all choirs can audition to be a part of our barbershop groups and State Choir. Three 8 th grade students, Emily Baugher, Aiden Brennan and Nick Krupicka made State Choir last year as 7th graders!
