eAcademy uses web-based course management systems to deliver course content. The primary platform utilized is Blackboard. Courses are designed by Olathe teachers and maintained by the instructors of the various courses, and are for the most part Olathe District Schools traditional classroom courses that have been modified for electronic instruction. eAcademy also may provide some course content through off-site course vendors. Courses occasionally use local software programs that run from software CDs, provided to students as part of their course materials. These may include instructional or tutorial applications, and text on CD. Audio or video CDs may also be provided. Students are expected to provide their own computer, Internet access, and Office software, and must have the ability to download files from the Internet and install software on their computer. Being able to manage computer software such as keeping your browser updated, controlling firewalls, turing off popup blockers, etc, is required. Generally Microsoft Word is required. PowerPoint or Excel may be needed to access content or complete a project in some courses. Students must be able to save files to earlier versions. For example if a student has Office 2007, he/she must be able to Save As.. and choose an earlier version of Office. Students must be proficient with computer management, and students unskilled in handling and managing electronic files may struggle with organization. Students are required to use student (school) email accounts for all correspondence with other students, instructors, and eAcademy and must be able to send and receive attachments. Educational pricing is available to faculty and students for many types of software at sites such as http://www.journeyed.com or through the Olathe School District. Academic verification (proof that you are a student) is required; a scan of your student ID is generally adequate. The eAcademy office can provide assistance locating software vendors if requested. Instructors provide clear instructions to students as to what materials are utilized in each course. Any student or parent who has a question about meeting these requirements should contact Randy Warner, eAcademy facilitator.
