How Do Students and Parents Learn about College Admissions, Financial Aid and Scholarships at OEHS?

  • Course Work - exploring career interests and working on college admissions requirements.
  • Information shared by classroom teachers, coaches, sponsors, school counselors and administrators.
  • OEHS announcements, bulletin boards, scholarship notebook, OEHS website, program planning guide and college and career center.
  • On-Campus college visits, college representatives visiting students at OEHS, guest speakers, college night, area college fairs and programs, on-line resources (including Career Cruising) and college/university websites.
  • Parent information meetings and parent newsletter

Students have the responsibility of completing Admissions Applications, Financial Aid Applications and Scholarship Applications completely, neatly and on time.

Teen Dating Violence and Sexual Assault Awareness
In recognition of April - Sexual Assault Awareness Month, SAFEHOME, Johnson County’s domestic violence agency, would like to invite the students and parents at your school to attend an evening of Teen Dating Violence and Sexual Assault Awareness.  It will be held April 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center - Social Hall 5801 W. 115th St., Overland Park, KS 66211.

The statistics are staggering:

  • 1 in 3 teenagers report knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, kicked, slapped, strangled or physically hurt by their partner. 
  • 1 in 5 high school girls has been physically or sexually abused by a dating partner.
  • 1 in 4 teenagers will be in an abusive relationship before they graduate high school.
  • 70% of young women who have been raped knew their rapist either as a boyfriend, friend, or casual acquaintance.

KDOT Transportation Safety Conference
The KDOT is offering scholarships to Kansas high school and post-high school students who wish to attend the Kansas Transportation Safety Conference, March 30-31, at the Doubletree Hotel Overland Park. For conference information, see the brochure or go on-line to http://www.continuinged.ku.edu/programs/transportation/.

JCCC Summer Opportunities:

  • Men in Nursing Training (MINT), designed for boys entering  the 9th and 10th grades and offered June 8-11, 2010 from 8:30a.m. – 3:30p.m. offers young men an opportunity to explore the nursing field and learn from successful male health professionals who are active in the field. MINT Application and Recommendation Form.
  • IT Girls, designed for girls entering grades 9,10 and 11 who are interested in computers and computer applications.  Young women participating in the summer program will design a fully manageable, custom – designed Web site with Face book photo gallery written in Flash.  This four day Monday thru Thursday program offered 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. is available the week of June 7 – 10 or  June 14 -17.  A maximum of 17 participants can be accepted each week.

The two above programs are available free of charge, however, an application is required along with a recommendation from a school official.

Youth Summer Camps in Barcelona, Spain!  SpainBCN-Summer Camps in Barcelona is a 1 to 4 week long program designed for boys and girls who want to improve their Spanish and practice their favorite sport with youth from around the world!  For further information contact them at:  spainbarcelona@spainbcn.com.

AP Test Registration
Registration for the AP tests will be done online this year. Registration starts January 22 and runs through midnight on March 23, no exceptions. Log on to www.olatheeasths.TotalRegistration.net and follow the directions on the website. For additional information click here or see Mrs. Schmale in the counseling office.

ACT Preparatory Workshops
The Olathe District Schools will offer ACT Preparatory Workshops to provide students test-taking strategies for improving their ACT test scores.

  • Workshop provided for Juniors and Seniors only.
  • Practice tests, scoring and analysis, test-taking strategies, logic/process instruction will be included.
  • One of the goals for the workshop is to help students feel more confident in the testing process.
  • The school district will offer workshop sessions to prepare for the October, April, and June Assessments.
  • The workshop for the April test will begin on March 1st. ACT Workshop session dates:
  • March 1st, March 8th, March 29th, and April 5th. Additional details and registration information available for the this session:

Sophomore ACT Online Preparatory Tutorial:
The Olathe District Schools is offering an ACT Online Workshop for sophomores to provide strategies for preparing for the ACT test. The online course will provide test-taking strategies in English, Math, Science and Reading as well as actual tests to take and solutions with feedback.

The tutorial is available from February 19th – May 17th and can be completed anywhere there is internet access. The cost of $30 will pay for the entire workshop. To enroll, students need to complete a form and they must attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, February 16th OR Thursday, February 18th at 7:00 PM in Room 308 at Olathe East.

Information and enrollment form for the class can be obtained by emailing:  mmitchelloe@olatheschoools.com.  Enrollment forms are also available in the counseling office. ACT recommends that students first take the ACT in the spring of their junior year, and this tutorial can provide that little extra preparation.

The counseling office has provided information through Senior English classes, "Writing a Resume." A completed resume and "Personal Profile" are helpful when requesting letters of recommendation from teachers or school counselors.
