Arriving and Leaving School

Arrival

Students who arrive at school before 8:10 may wait in the gym or the library. Library activities include reading, drawing, and working on the computer. Students who chose the gym will be able to walk laps while visiting with their friends. Starting at 8:10, the supervising staff members will release students to their classrooms.

Dismissal

Walkers, bus riders, daycare bus riders, preschool and kindergarten students will be dismissed from their classrooms before car riders. For safety reasons, we will keep walkers away from the car dismissal area.

Parents will receive cards with their children's student numbers on them. If you had a number last year, we did our best to assign the same number. We ask parents to place the card in their cars in the windshield on the right-hand side of the dash with the number facing outward, so it can be easily seen. The number on the card needs to be fully visible. Parents who need to come into the building to talk with teachers should park in the parking lot and not get into the student pick-up line of cars.

We plan to keep all students inside. Riders will be released when their ride numbers appear on a vehicle currently in the circle drive. Drivers should remain in their cars when their children enter the cars. Staff will assist students to enter each car, as needed.

The goal is to move all cars through the line safely and quickly, hopefully within 15 minutes of dismissal time.

Recess
Recess times are scheduled during the day for students' enjoyment and physical activity. It is expected that all students will participate. At the beginning of each school year, teachers review safety procedures and rules of conduct for the playground.

Temperature: The temperature of the air, wind speed, relative humidity, and amount of sunshine all effect whether the normal recess schedule is maintained. The following wind chill index is used:

Outdoor recess ------14 degrees or above
Limited recess---------9 degrees or above
Indoor recess----------8 degrees or below

Condition of the Playground Area: Due to children's safety, the amount of snow and ice may prohibit the use of the playground even when the temperature warrants outside or limited outside recess.

Appropriate Student Dress: Attire is another factor that affects the normal recess schedule. Particularly during cold weather, gloves/mittens, hats and boots are encouraged. If a student should come to school without clothing appropriate for the weather, the building staff will determine the appropriate course of action, dependent upon the conditions.

Absence/Attendance:
A child should attend school every day. The progress of learners who miss more than 10 days of school is closely monitored and appropriate steps will be taken to work with you to improve attendance.

It is imperative that the nurse and principal be made aware of situations and /or medical concerns that affect a child's attendance at school. When chronic absenteeism occurs, the school may ask the parent to provide medical confirmation of the health of the student.

It is the parent's responsibility to call school, 780-7640, by 9:00 AM each day a child will be absent. At that time, parents should request homework if they wish the child's teacher to prepare missed assignments.

If the principal can be of assistance to you or your children, please contact her by telephone at (913) 780-7640. You can also email him at: jbrockwayrw@olatheschools.com.
